**Operating Principles**
Butterfly valves can be operated either manually using a handle or automatically through an actuator. The handle locks the valve in the "open" or "closed" position, though other positions are also available. The actuator moves a piston axially to rotate the butterfly valve by 90 degrees, allowing precise control over fluid flow.
