2-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 1-18-94

Here’s a throwback from Dennis McGuire, Jr. for #TBT:

Let’s take a trip back to January 18th, 1994 — one of the coldest days in Chicago history. The high that day only reached 11 degrees below zero, after a morning low of 21 degrees below, resulting in a daily average temperature of 16 degrees below zero. On the South Side of the city, firefighters were on the scene battling a fire at an apartment building on S. St. Lawrence Avenue, between 8049 and 8059. The blaze was reported as a 2-11, meaning it was a two-alarm fire that had spread to 11 rooms across a four-story structure.

It’s incredible to think about how the firefighters worked under such extreme conditions. The cold made every task more difficult, and yet they showed incredible dedication and courage. This photo captures a moment from that freezing day, highlighting the bravery of those who risk their lives to protect others.
