ADI Introduces New Charge Pump Regulator

ADI's latest ADM8845 charge pump regulator provides the most accurate backlighting for miniature color thin film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal displays (LCDs) for mobile phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and digital cameras.

The device uses advanced charge pump technology that drives six white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to evenly distribute light across the entire LCD display panel. It provides industry-leading matching with less than 1% error due to accurate monitoring of individual LED currents. Its high power efficiency (up to 88%) helps save battery power.

And it uses a small outline lead-frame chip scale package (3 mm × 3 mm LFCSP) to save up to 44% of the printed circuit board (PCB) area with the nearest class. The ADM8845 monitors the operating current matching of each LED individually to achieve excellent current matching performance by using six separate current control modules (up to 1% maximum matching error). This ensures a uniform backlight brightness in the entire illumination area of the LCD display.

The two control inputs of the ADM8845 allow the LEDs to be switched on and off in two separate modules, 4 LEDs and 2 LEDs, making it suitable for the latest clam-shell mobile phones. It has a primary display and a smaller secondary display. The brightness of the LEDs can be adjusted by changing the input signal to these control pins. To achieve maximum power efficiency, the on-chip charge pump automatically switches between 1x, 1.5x, and 2x operating modes depending on the battery's supply voltage. The soft-start circuit limits the inrush current to prevent abrupt voltages at startup.
