Arrest made for starting Cicero warehouse fire

This story comes from MyFoxChicago.com:

A teenage boy has been charged with starting a major fire that destroyed most of an empty warehouse in Cicero earlier this week. The incident, which was classified as an "extra-alarm" fire, involved a group of teens who reportedly set the blaze, possibly to stay warm.

The high school-aged suspect was charged with two counts of arson after he and a group of other teens allegedly went to the warehouse at 1829 54th Ave. on Tuesday and started a fire. According to town spokesman Ray Hanania, the teen played with the flames, causing them to spread rapidly. The group then fled the scene.

Firefighters arrived around 6:15 p.m. and found the building fully engulfed. The fire quickly spread to a nearby building at 1843 54th Ave., home to Central Steel Fabricators. This secondary blaze was later reported to be an accident, caused by a space heater.

While firefighters were still working to control the warehouse fire early Wednesday morning, another fire broke out at a home on S. 50th Ct. around 3:30 a.m. It quickly spread to a neighboring house, but no injuries were reported.

The warehouse fire burned for over 12 hours before being fully extinguished. Multiple fire departments from the area helped fight the blaze. The teenager was arrested on Friday night following information provided to local investigators.

Police confirmed that no other juveniles will face charges related to the fire. They are continuing to investigate the exact cause of the initial blaze.

From NBC5:

A teenager has been charged with starting a five-alarm fire that destroyed a vacant warehouse and a neighboring business in west suburban Cicero earlier this week, according to officials.

The juvenile suspect was arrested on Friday night after information was given to the Cicero Fire Department, which then passed it along to police.

According to authorities, the suspect was with two or more high school-aged friends who went to the warehouse and lit a fire—possibly to keep warm. The suspect reportedly played with the fire, which led to it spreading quickly. The group then ran away.

Fire Chief Ron Opalecky said, “We’re very pleased that this fire has been resolved and a suspect has been identified.”

The fire was first reported just after 6 p.m. on Tuesday at the warehouse located at 1829 54th Avenue. When firefighters arrived, the building was already fully engulfed in flames, visible for miles. The fire raged for over 12 hours and required the help of more than a dozen fire departments.

At one point, the flames jumped to the adjacent building housing Central Steel Fabricators, which contains flammable materials like cardboard and aerosol cans. Officials feared explosions, but both buildings were completely destroyed. Fortunately, no one was injured.

Police Superintendent Bernard Harrison stated that no other charges will be filed in connection with the warehouse fire.

Cicero's town president praised the firefighters and law enforcement for their efforts in containing the fires and identifying the cause. “These are terrible tragedies and many lives have been disrupted,” said Larry Dominick. “I’m proud of the hard work that our employees and Fire and Police officials put into protecting our community and responding to emergencies.”
