first snow brings accidents
As the Chicago area experienced its **first snow of the season**, local fire departments were kept busy responding to multiple accidents. This morning, a two-car head-on collision occurred on Route 173, west of Delaney Road in Wadsworth, Illinois. Jeff Rudolph captured the scene, documenting the efforts of the Newport Township Fire Protection District (FPD), who arrived with several units. They were joined by emergency responders from Zion and Winthrop Harbor, highlighting the collaborative nature of first-responder efforts during inclement weather.
Six individuals were transported to medical facilities, and while injuries were reported, they did not appear to be life-threatening. The crash site was clearly affected by slick road conditions, which likely contributed to the accident. Emergency crews worked quickly to secure the area and assist the injured, with one of the vehicles requiring significant extrication efforts.
Jeff Rudolph’s photos show the extent of the response, including Newport Township ambulances 1441 and 1458, as well as a squad unit that helped block the road for safety. A Winthrop Harbor ambulance and a Zion Fire Department unit also arrived on scene, demonstrating the importance of mutual aid in such situations.
One of the images captures a minivan involved in the collision, with firefighters working to remove the driver's door to extract the occupant. Another shot shows the protective role of the Newport squad, acting as a barrier to prevent further incidents.
