This report comes from Larry Shapiro: Wheeling firefighters were dispatched just before 4 p.m. to 195 Cindy Lane after reports of smoke coming from a home. The situation quickly escalated to a Code 4 fire when police arrived and confirmed that the house was fully engulfed in flames. Two residents who had managed to escape the home were taken to Northwest Community Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. The initial assessment by Wheeling Engine 23, the first unit on the scene, revealed visible fire through the roof of the single-family home. Firefighters launched an aggressive interior attack, with flames reported in both the attic and second floor. According to local sources, the homeowner was working on plumbing and soldering pipes when the fire broke out. Additional help came from Long Grove, Buffalo Grove, Arlington Heights, and Mount Prospect fire departments, all supporting the efforts of Wheeling crews at the scene.
