Growth in Rooftop Solar Sector Help to Reduce India’s Power Crisis

Since 2013, rooftop solar installations in India have grown steadily, from 72 MW per year to 227 MW annually. Government incentives such as tax holidays, duty exemptions, and custom concessions have supported this growth. However, there is still a need to boost domestic manufacturing to reduce reliance on imports. Currently, India depends heavily on China for photovoltaic cells, and by 2030, it is expected to import $42 billion worth of solar equipment—equivalent to 100 GW of capacity.

Despite these challenges, states like Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Maharashtra are leading the way in adopting solar technology. The government has also prioritized residential solar installations, offering net metering in 30 out of 36 states and union territories, along with a 30% subsidy for households and non-profits. These efforts have spurred growth in the residential solar sector and helped expand the market for solar companies.

Solar Vs Diesel Generators Help to Reduce India’s Power Crisis

Recent studies reveal that solar energy is more cost-effective than diesel generators, which are commonly used in areas without reliable grid access. According to research by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), diesel generators produce between 15-20 units of electricity at a higher cost, while solar power costs only INR 5-6 per unit. This is especially true in regions like Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, where solar solutions have proven to be more economical and sustainable.

If policies such as mandating solar rooftop installations for housing societies and banning diesel generators are implemented, along with support for mini-grid and off-grid systems, India could achieve faster electrification. Encouraging local solar manufacturing would also help lower prices, making solar energy more accessible to all.

The Solar Future Looks Bright

The Centre for Science and Environment is developing a solar calculator tool that will help individuals estimate their energy savings if they switch to solar. Combined with ongoing policy support and growing awareness, these developments signal a positive shift toward a future where solar energy plays a central role in solving India’s energy challenges. With continued investment and innovation, the path to a fully electrified India is becoming clearer every day.
