LANXESS invests 520 million U.S. dollars to build butyl rubber plant in Singapore

According to foreign reports, LANXESS Corporation recently opened a butyl rubber plant in Jurong Island, Singapore, which is the company's third global butyl rubber plant.

Lanxess said that the newly started Jurong Island plant is the most modern factory in Asia and will be producing halogenated butyl rubber and butyl rubber in the future. LANXESS said it has invested 523 million U.S. dollars in the plant and created about 160 jobs.

The Jurong Island plant was put into operation earlier this year and production capacity has gradually improved. LANXESS stated that the plant will be fully operational by 2015 and that its rubber production capacity will reach 100,000 metric tons per year.

Axel C. Heitmann, chairman of LANXESS's management board, said: “This is the largest investment project in the history of the company and highlights Asia’s important position in our synthetic rubber business.”

Jurong Island Plant is the third butyl rubber factory in the world of LANXESS. The other two factories are located in Sarnia, Canada and Zwijndrecht, Belgium.

LANXESS expects that the butyl rubber market will maintain an average annual growth rate of 5% in the next few years, and the Asian market will become the main driving force for this growth. In addition, the tire industry accounts for three-quarters of its butyl rubber sales, and 50% of the company's sales are generated from the Asian market.
