Skokie flies WTC Patriot Flag
The Skokie Fire Department proudly displayed a massive 30' x 50' Patriot Flag on June 16, 2011, as part of a national journey to honor the memory of September 11, 2001. The flag, which traveled across all 50 states, was set to fly at the three locations where American lives were lost during the 9/11 attacks in 2001. On that day in Skokie, the flag was raised from the rooftop of Skokie Truck Co. No. 18, located at the corner of Skokie Boulevard and Golf Road.
Lieutenant Hank Sajovic of Skokie Truck Co. No. 18 shared the story behind the event: "The flag is traveling across the country and will fly in all 50 states. During the week of September 11, 2011, it will be at the three locations where Americans were killed on 9/11/2001. Members of the Skokie Fire and Police Honor Guard provided the honors at the raising."
The event was captured in a series of powerful images showing firefighters and police officers working together to raise the massive flag. From the moment it was carried onto the ladder truck to its final unfurling above the city, the scene was both moving and inspiring. The flag stood tall, waving proudly over the crowd, with the honor guard standing in respectful silence.
One of the most touching moments was when a banner listing the names of all those who perished on 9/11 was displayed alongside the flag. This added a deep sense of remembrance and respect to the occasion. Also present was Joe Torrillo, a retired FDNY lieutenant who survived the collapse of the World Trade Center towers on 9/11. His presence highlighted the personal connection many firefighters have to this cause.
