According to foreign media reports, at 10:00 p.m. local time on March 18, an Uber self-driving vehicle collided with a pedestrian in Arizona and caused his death. The accident was the world’s first accidental death due to self-driving vehicles, which may cause a certain degree of damage to autopilot technology. All along, major companies have claimed that autonomous driving technology can save more lives and change the mode of transportation.

According to reports, the accident vehicle was a Volvo XC90. At the time of the accident, the vehicle was in an automatic driving mode and the driver was on the driver's seat. Local police said that the vehicle was driving north at a speed of about 40 miles per hour, and pedestrian Elaine Herzberg was pushing a bicycle to walk west from the east on the sidewalk. Herzberg, 49, was killed when she was taken to the hospital.

After the accident, Uber announced that it suspended its auto pilot test program in North American cities such as Tempe, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Toronto. The accident vehicle was also confirmed by Volvo, but Volvo said that the software controlling the vehicle is not Volvo's own.

The National Traffic Safety Committee of the United States stated that it will send a team to conduct an accident investigation. The Ontario Ministry of Transportation also said that the accident will be investigated and Uber is also testing in the area.
