MTU upgrades 1163 series marine engines

Germany's MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH will upgrade its 1163 series of marine engines to meet IMO 2 and IMO 3 emission standards. Rainer Breidenbach, executive director of engine business at Tognum, said, "The upgraded 1163 series will be cleaner and more fuel efficient than current engines."

It is reported that the new version of the new fuel rail injection system and ADEC engine management system, using the engine internal technology, without exhaust gas after-treatment, in line with the IMO 2 emission standards that will be effective in 2011, noise and earthquake resistance have also been improved.

The upgraded new series uses SCR systems to reduce NOx emissions and ensure future engines operate in Pollution Emission Control Areas (ECAs), in line with the IMO 3 emission standards to be introduced in 2016.

The three-cylinder 1163 series engine (12V, 16V, 20V) covers 4440-7400kW/1300rpm, and its name comes from its ability of 1,163 liters per cylinder, which can be used for merchant ships and warships.
