Schaeffler's restructured hybrid drive business architecture

Energy efficiency, environmental friendliness and the rapidly growing number of hybrid and electric vehicles mark the start of a new era for the automotive industry. Schaeffler will develop with forward-looking technical support. In this context, Schaeffler will double the global production capacity in the field of electric drives. In the next five years, Schaeffler will increase the total number of employees working on electric drives and mechatronics worldwide to 2,400.

Professor Peter Guzman, deputy chief executive officer and chief technology officer of the Schaeffler Group, said: "Schaeffler established the Electric Drive Systems Business Unit in 2011 to systematically consolidate our business activities in the field of electric drives. In five years, we have already had a rich and varied product portfolio and successfully developed many new products."

Driven by R&D investment, Schaeffler Electric Drive Systems has developed new technologies for mass production in the short term. Successfully developed products, such as hybrid power modules and bridges, can form new product lines and drive overall growth and high investment in the number of employees. Schaeffler has adjusted its organizational structure to continue to promote rapid development and success in this dynamic market.

Andreas Englisch has been responsible for the reorganized hybrid drive business unit since April 2016. His immediate superior was Matthias Zink, President of the Transmission Systems. The hybrid drive business unit includes bridges, hybrid modules, and an infinitely variable transmission product line. By the end of the year, the total number of employees will exceed 300.

A complete product line structure ensures optimal cooperation between R&D, procurement and production. Each product line is supported by the central R&D department under the Automotive Division, which is responsible for the comprehensive simulation and testing of the various drive topology structures of the car, including the procedures required for electrification. The division consists of a global network with a focus on Germany, China and the United States. All projects, such as the start of mass production of bridges and hybrid modules, can achieve unified international management.
