Technical rescue in Minooka, 1-23-20

Excerpts from NWherald.com:

A man was rescued after being partially buried in a grain bin at Minooka Grain, Lumber & Supply Co. on West Mondamin Street around 12:45 p.m. on Thursday. Firefighters from the Minooka Fire Protection District worked through the afternoon to carefully remove grain from the silo, and the man was successfully freed just before 4 p.m.

The individual was conscious and breathing during the rescue and reported feeling well afterward. His condition was stable, and no serious injuries were reported. The incident highlighted the dangers of working around grain storage units, where a person can be trapped in seconds due to the weight and flow of the material.

Approximately 20 fire departments responded to the scene, with a Vac-Con vacuum truck playing a key role in removing grain around the victim. According to the National Agricultural Safety Database, it only takes two or three seconds for someone to become trapped in flowing grain, and within 10 seconds, they can be completely submerged.

The event drew significant attention from local emergency services and underscored the importance of safety protocols when handling agricultural equipment. Photos from the scene show the scale of the operation and the quick response by firefighters. Fortunately, the man was able to walk away from the incident without major complications.
