Tinley Park Fire Department in the news:

The TribLocal is reporting that Tinley Park may be moving forward with adding live-in firefighters at two of its fire stations.

Back in 1901, when Tinley Park’s volunteer fire department was formed with just 13 members, the idea of having a full-time, on-site crew at a fire station would have seemed impossible. But over the past 11 decades, the department has grown to 120 firefighters and now operates with 24-hour staffing at all four stations. Currently, Station 1 and Station 4 already use live-in arrangements, with firefighters staying on-site for shifts.

Now, village officials are looking to expand this model to Station 2 and Station 3, which are located at 7825 W. 167th St. and 9191 W. 175th St., respectively. The upgrade is expected to take place in 2013 or 2014, with a projected cost of $1 million. The plan includes improving exercise areas, expanding living and kitchen spaces, creating separate sleeping and bathroom facilities for men and women, and adding office space.

Trustee Brian Maher, who leads the Public Safety Committee, said the upgrades will follow the same model used at Station 4, allowing for a team of four firefighters per shift. He noted that while the changes are minimal, they will bring the stations up to basic standards for residential staffing. “It’s not perfect, but we want to get them ready as soon as possible,” he added.

Another recent article from TribLocal explores the future of an old Seagrave aerial ladder truck owned by the Tinley Park Fire Department. The report suggests that the vehicle could be donated to a small community in Indiana.

A Village Board committee has recommended that Tinley Park donate the aging ladder truck, known as Truck No. 276, to the Marshall Volunteer Fire Department, a small rural community near Turkey Run State Park. The only condition is that Marshall must find a way to cover the insurance costs for the 37-year-old vehicle, which is still functional for multi-story buildings and structures located away from paved roads.

The three-member Public Safety Committee unanimously approved the donation after Assistant Fire Chief Steve Klotz explained that the truck no longer has any practical use for Tinley Park. Klotz said the Marshall department, which currently uses an engine, tanker, brush truck, and crew cab, expressed interest if they could secure the necessary insurance.

Committee member Tom Staunton supported the move, saying it would be a great opportunity for the small town. Committee Chairman Brian Maher emphasized that the village has a long-standing tradition of helping out smaller communities in need. He described Marshall as a rural town with limited resources, and noted that donating the truck would give it a second life.

In 2002, Tinley Park also donated several squad cars to Iron Mountain, Michigan, which had no budget for vehicles. Those cars were later sold or repurposed. This time, the ladder truck, purchased in 1975, was taken out of service due to state insurance requirements. It was replaced in May with a new 100-foot ladder truck, while the pumper truck from 1994 was sold to Chicago Heights for $50,000.

Village Manager Scott Niehaus mentioned that scrapping the ladder truck was an option, but donating it would provide more value than its estimated salvage price of around $8,000. If approved, the village would charge a small fee and ensure legal protection for the transfer.

Maher credited Fire Chief Ken Dunn for identifying the potential recipient. “Firefighters tend to support each other,” he said. “I hope Marshall can find the money to insure the truck.”

Klotz added that the village wouldn’t deliver the truck, which has a top speed of 45 to 50 mph. Instead, the Marshall firefighters would need to arrange for transportation, possibly using a trailer.
