From the Waukegan Fire Department's Facebook page: On this chilly Christmas morning, Waukegan firefighters, along with crews from several neighboring departments, are working hard to put out a stubborn fire. If you're out and about today, please avoid the area around S. Genesee and Washington Streets. The fire at 18 S. Genesee was successfully extinguished by 10 a.m. this morning. The building was in the process of being demolished as part of the city’s initiative to remove vacant and problematic structures. Over ten fire departments and approximately 50 firefighters joined the effort, along with support from Webb Excavating. Despite the freezing temperatures and icy conditions, no injuries were reported. A special thanks goes to Mayor Cunningham, who came out to personally thank everyone for their hard work on this tough Christmas morning. It's a testament to the teamwork and dedication of first responders across the region.
