Site Bite: Sizing an Evaporator Coil at JFK Airport
**Site Bite: Sizing an Evaporator Coil at JFK Airport**
Join James Filauro, our NY-area Account Manager, and me, Jack Kessler, as we take you behind the scenes of a recent coil job at John F. Kennedy International Airport—the busiest airport in New York. This was my first time on-site with the team, and it turned out to be one of the most exciting and educational experiences of my internship.
We were called in to size an evaporator coil located in the control tower, which is no small task. The process began with a long journey through the airport, where security checks were rigorous and the atmosphere was intense. Driving across active runways with planes taking off and landing right next to us made for an unforgettable ride—especially for someone new to the field like me.
Once inside the control tower, we had to wait for an escort due to ongoing construction. We took a temporary elevator to reach the unit, and when we finally arrived, we found that the evaporator coil had already been removed. However, the original Trane® chilled water coil was still in place. Using its dimensions, James was able to determine the correct size for the new evaporator coil, and I was there to take detailed notes.
The mechanical contractor on site emphasized the importance of accurate connection locations, which we didn’t have initially. But by measuring the existing holes on the side panel of the chilled water coil, we were able to replicate the layout precisely. This experience reinforced the value of combining technical knowledge with hands-on problem-solving.
It was a challenging but rewarding day, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn from James and gain real-world experience at such a high-profile location. Thanks to the expertise of Nationwide Coils and the support of my team, we were able to complete the job efficiently and accurately.
