American scientists to create a new nano-valve

A research group recently announced that they made the world's first nano-valve. The valve controls the entry and exit of molecules, which scientists envisioned in the future to deliver individual drug molecules to cells. The nanometer valve developed by professor UCLA professor Jeffrey Chingk et al consists of two parts. One is an engineered rotaxane molecule that is the active "valve" of a valve; the other is a 500 nanometer square porous silicon material that is a fixed part of a valve with a small hole size of only a few nanometers. This result will be published in the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences" in the United States this week. Rotamane is an artificially designed spinning wheel-shaped material, which has gained wide attention in the field of nanotechnology in recent years. The UCLA researchers designed this kind of on-off rotaxane that includes a dumbbell-shaped long chain and a molecular ring that moves back and forth linearly between the dumbbells, and the electric force between the molecules drives the molecule ring. Earlier, scientists have validated that this rotaxane can be used as a microelectronic switch. Researchers will serve as a valve "core" of the rota, attached to the porous silicon orifice to form the valve. Porous silicon material pore size is very clever, both to allow molecules through, but also enough to make the molecular ring of rotaxan blocked the orifice. In this way, when the molecular ring of rotaxan is driven upwards by the electric force, the valve is in the "on" state and molecules can freely pass through the orifice. When the molecular rotation of the rotaxane blocks the orifice, the valve In the "off" state. Chingk said that in the future this nano-valve can be attached to the cell membrane, with light control to deliver a single drug molecules inside the cell, to achieve "accurate treatment."
