An open letter received – Chicago Safety; Re: George Floyd
Dear CFD Engine 94 Team,
I want to start by expressing my deepest gratitude for your vital role in keeping our communities safe, especially during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Your dedication and service do not go unnoticed.
In addition to that, I'd like to share a personal reflection on the emotional turmoil our country is going through following the tragic death of George Floyd. As a clinical psychologist based in Chicago, I've worked extensively with individuals experiencing grief, trauma, and loss. The current unrest across Minnesota and other parts of the U.S. isn't just about anger—it's a powerful response to deep-seated pain, historical injustice, and systemic racism that has affected countless lives.
Those of us who are deeply affected by George Floyd’s death—and by the many others who have suffered similar fates—need to feel seen, heard, and validated. Trauma can be overwhelming, and it often manifests in ways that are difficult to control. In times like these, it's essential that those in positions of authority approach the situation with empathy and understanding.
I know you're all busy, so I'll keep this brief. Here's one idea: What if members of law enforcement, including fire departments, wore signs or displayed banners that reflect the emotions and messages of the protestors? For example, wearing a "I Can't Breathe" sign, or displaying a "Black Lives Matter" flag, or even an "Again?" banner on your vehicles. These gestures could signal solidarity and acknowledge the pain being expressed.
This kind of visual message might help reduce the sense of threat among protesters, making them feel less like they're being silenced or controlled. Instead, it could foster a sense of mutual respect and shared purpose: “We are here to help, we see you, we hear you, and we care.â€
Thank you again for your service and for considering this perspective. I truly appreciate your work and the impact you make every day.
Warm regards,
Kristen Friedman
