An open letter received – Chicago Safety; Re: George Floyd

Dear CFD Engine 94 Team, I hope this message finds you well. First and foremost, I want to express my deepest gratitude for your incredible work on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic. Your dedication and courage have not gone unnoticed, and I truly appreciate the sacrifices you make every day. In addition to that, I’d like to share a personal reflection regarding the emotional turmoil our country is currently experiencing following the tragic death of George Floyd. As a clinical psychologist based in Chicago, I’ve spent years working with individuals who have endured grief, trauma, and loss. The recent protests and unrest across the country are not just reactions to a single event—they are responses to deep-seated pain, historical injustice, and a collective sense of frustration that has been building for far too long. It’s essential that people who are grieving or feeling deeply hurt by these events are allowed to process their emotions in a safe and supportive way. Trauma can be overwhelming, and when it's compounded by systemic oppression, it becomes even more complex. That’s why I believe it's important for those in positions of authority—like yourselves—to approach these situations with empathy and sensitivity. I understand that your job is demanding and often challenging. But I also believe that small gestures can make a big difference. What if, instead of simply trying to control the situation, authorities showed visible signs of solidarity with the community? For example, wearing a sign that says “I Can’t Breathe” or displaying a “Black Lives Matter” flag on your vehicles could be powerful ways to communicate that you understand the pain being felt. This kind of gesture could help reduce the sense of alienation many protesters feel. It might shift the dynamic from one of confrontation to one of shared understanding. It would send a clear message: “We see you. We hear you. And we’re here to help keep you safe.” I know that change doesn’t happen overnight, but small steps toward empathy and connection can lead to meaningful progress. Thank you again for all that you do. I truly appreciate your service and for taking the time to consider these thoughts.
