Australia is willing to share clean energy technology with China

At the 2008 China-Australia Clean Energy and Environment Dialogue Forum, Victoria’s Minister for Energy and Resources, Richard Bacheler, shared insights with reporters about the energy similarities between China and Australia. He noted that both countries have limited reserves of natural gas and oil but possess significant deposits of brown coal. While Australia is actively investing in renewable energy sources like solar and wind power, it still relies on brown coal for electricity generation. However, this type of coal produces higher carbon dioxide emissions compared to both black coal and natural gas, leading to similar environmental challenges faced by China. Bacheler emphasized that Australia is keen to share its clean energy technologies with China, aiming to support sustainable development. He also highlighted an ongoing collaboration between China Harbin Electric Power Equipment Manufacturing Company and Victoria’s HRL Company. Harbin is a global leader in coal power technology, while HRL has developed advanced methods for brown coal liquefaction. The partnership involves manufacturing equipment in China and exporting them to Australia for the construction of a new lignite power plant in Victoria. This state-of-the-art facility will utilize HRL’s innovative technology, with a capacity of 500 megawatts—far exceeding that of traditional plants. It is expected to cut CO₂ emissions by 30% and reduce water consumption by 50%, making it one of the most efficient and environmentally friendly brown coal power plants in the world. Bacheler added that China’s new five-year plan places a strong emphasis on clean energy use and emission reduction. Similarly, the Australian government plans to introduce a comparable framework in 2010. Both nations are aligned in their goals and are looking to expand future cooperation projects in the clean energy sector. This collaboration represents a promising step toward a more sustainable and environmentally responsible energy future.
