Australia is willing to share clean energy technology with China
At the 2008 China-Australia Clean Energy and Environment Dialogue Forum, Victoria's Minister for Energy and Resources, Richard Bacheler, shared insights with reporters about the energy similarities between China and Australia. He noted that both countries have limited reserves of natural gas and oil, but they are rich in brown coal. While both nations rely on this resource for power generation, it comes with a significant environmental cost—producing more carbon dioxide than black coal or natural gas. This has led to similar challenges in managing pollution.
Australia is actively investing in renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, but also recognizes the importance of improving the efficiency of brown coal use. In this context, the country is eager to collaborate with China by sharing clean energy technologies and supporting joint projects.
Peter Bacheler highlighted an ongoing cooperation project between China’s Harbin Electric Power Equipment Manufacturing Company and Victoria’s HRL Company. Harbin is a global leader in coal power technology, while HRL has developed advanced methods for brown coal liquefaction. Together, they are working to produce equipment in China for shipment to Australia, where it will be used to build a state-of-the-art lignite power plant in Victoria.
This new facility will leverage HRL’s cutting-edge technology and have a capacity of 500 megawatts, far exceeding traditional plants. It is expected to cut CO2 emissions by 30% and reduce water usage by 50%, making it the largest application of innovative brown coal technology worldwide.
Bacheler also emphasized that both China and Australia are committed to cleaner energy use and emission reduction. With China’s new five-year plan focusing heavily on these areas, and Australia planning to implement a similar policy in 2010, there is a strong foundation for future collaboration. Both sides are looking forward to expanding their partnership and developing more joint initiatives in the clean energy sector.
