Domestic power generation equipment achieves a major breakthrough in the power generation of the Three Gorges right bank unit
China has made significant progress in the production and installation of large hydropower units. On July 8 at 4:15 pm, the No. 26 unit—China's first domestically produced 700,000-kilowatt unit—successfully completed a 72-hour trial run at the Three Gorges Project. Manufactured by Harbin Electric Machinery Co., Ltd., the unit demonstrated stable operation, with normal temperature, vibration, and flow levels across all components, meeting design specifications.
Li Yongan, General Manager of China Three Gorges Corporation, emphasized that the successful trial run marked an important milestone in the localization of large hydropower units. He highlighted the importance of continued collaboration among all parties to achieve the goal of "stable operation for the first 100 days."
According to a representative from Harbin Electric, the right bank power station of the Three Gorges Project represents a major breakthrough in domestic hydropower technology. Designed and built independently, the units have undergone comprehensive innovations in turbines and hydro-generators, elevating China’s hydropower manufacturing standards to new heights.
After over 50 years of development, Harbin Electric has established itself as a leader in hydropower technology. In the Three Gorges right bank power station, four 700,000 kW units developed by Harbin Electric have become a symbol of national technological achievement.
One key highlight is the elimination of turbine pressure pulsation, a long-standing issue in hydropower systems. By innovating on imported technologies, Harbin Electric successfully addressed this challenge, leading to the world’s first Francis turbine runner designed for the Three Gorges right bank, which outperforms previous models in hydraulic efficiency and stability.
Another innovation is the adoption of air-cooling technology for large generators. This groundbreaking approach not only improves reliability and reduces costs but also challenges traditional water-cooling methods used in units over 600,000 kW. Harbin Electric’s design achieved a unique balance between thermal control and structural optimization, making it a global leader in this field.
Finally, the insulation technology used in the Three Gorges units has reached world-class standards. The application of advanced insulation materials and techniques ensures the reliability and performance of the generators, supporting the broader goal of domesticating large-scale hydropower equipment.
With these achievements, Harbin Electric has not only strengthened its position in the global hydropower industry but also paved the way for future projects such as Longtan, Xiaowan, and Jinping I. The success of the Three Gorges project marks a turning point in China’s ability to produce high-performance, large-scale hydropower units independently.
