China's first generation of a new generation of nuclear emergency diesel units
On April 29th, China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation's Shaanxi Diesel Engine Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. and China National Nuclear Corporation Group's Zhongyuan Foreign Engineering Company signed a key supply contract for critical equipment and nuclear emergency diesel units intended for export nuclear power plant projects in Beijing. This agreement marks a significant milestone for China Shipbuilding Heavy Industry as it leverages its technological development and manufacturing capabilities to enter the nuclear power sector. It also represents the first time that such a product is being produced domestically in China, signaling a major step toward the localization of a new generation of nuclear emergency diesel generator sets—essential components in nuclear power plants.
Previously, these systems were entirely imported, but this project has enabled the domestic industry to take control of the core technology. The nuclear-level emergency diesel unit project was led by Shaanxi Diesel Engine Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., with collaboration from the Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research and Design Institute and several domestic manufacturers. Together, they successfully completed the design and testing of the relay emergency electrical system protection and control, as well as the mechanical auxiliary system. Through this project, the company has gradually gained mastery over the core technologies required for nuclear emergency diesel units, paving the way for future independent development and production in this critical field.
