Close Jaguar UK Factory UK Jaguar will be made in China?
Morning News (Reporter Ma Xiaosen) – The iconic British car brand Jaguar might soon find itself under Chinese ownership. On Friday, Ford announced the closure of a Jaguar factory in the UK, citing rising costs and declining sales as the main reasons. Jia Xinguang, chief analyst at China Automotive Industry Consulting and Development Co., Ltd., suggested that production of Jaguar could potentially be relocated to China.
When contacted, Ford (China) did not confirm the possibility, but stated that this move would not impact Jaguar’s sales in the Chinese market. Currently, Jaguar operates five dealerships across the country, with plans to expand to 18 by the end of the year. This growth is driven by strong demand for the brand in China.
Jia Xinguang believes that if production shifts, it may take place at a new plant in Nanjing, jointly operated by Ford and Changan. He explained that since Jaguar is a premium luxury vehicle, it won’t be mass-produced, so Ford is unlikely to build a separate production base for the brand. Meanwhile, Ford’s Chongqing plant is too small to accommodate such a shift.
If these speculations are accurate, then along with the upcoming Rover production in Shanghai, two classic British car brands will soon become part of China's automotive landscape.
Jaguar, originally known as the "Jaguar" brand, was established in 1922 and has long been a symbol of British engineering and luxury. It was acquired by Ford in 1990. The factory now being closed is the very one where Jaguar was first produced. In August of this year, Jaguar’s sales in the U.S. dropped by 38.3%. Ford’s management stated that the decision to close the facility is part of an effort to cut losses, focusing on eliminating excess capacity. This year, Jaguar’s production is expected to decrease by 15,000 units.
