Morning News (Reporter Ma Xiaosen) – A potential shift is on the horizon for the iconic British car brand, Jaguar. Ford announced on Friday that it will shut down a Jaguar factory in the UK due to rising costs and declining sales. According to Jia Xinguang, chief analyst at China Automotive Industry Consulting and Development Co., Ltd., there's speculation that production of Jaguar could be relocated to China.
While Ford (China) has not confirmed the move publicly, they told this reporter that it won’t impact Jaguar’s sales in the Chinese market. Currently, Jaguar operates five dealerships across China, with plans to expand to 18 by the end of the year. This growth reflects strong demand for the brand in the country.
Jia Xinguang suggested that if production moves to China, it might take place at a new plant in Nanjing, jointly operated by Ford and Changan. He explained that since Jaguar is a premium luxury vehicle, it’s unlikely to be mass-produced, so Ford wouldn’t establish a separate production base solely for Jaguar. The Chongqing plant, meanwhile, is too small to accommodate such a shift.
If this speculation proves true, it would mark another step in the growing presence of British car brands in China. Alongside the upcoming Rover production in Shanghai, Jaguar could soon join the ranks of British-made cars produced locally.
Jaguar, known as the "Jaguar" in China, was founded in 1922 and has long been a symbol of British engineering and elegance. It was acquired by Ford in 1990. The factory set to close is the very one where Jaguar was originally born. In August of this year, Jaguar’s U.S. sales dropped by 38.3%, prompting Ford to make cuts in underperforming facilities. The company stated that only surplus factories and production lines would be closed to reduce losses. This year, Jaguar’s production is expected to decrease by 15,000 units.
With its rich heritage and global reputation, Jaguar’s future in China could signal a new chapter for the brand, blending British tradition with Chinese manufacturing capabilities.
