STX Shipbuilding Reduces Construction Duration with Floating Dock
STX Shipbuilding recently made a significant breakthrough by successfully launching a large oil tanker using an innovative floating dock construction method, showcasing its advanced engineering capabilities to the global maritime industry. This achievement highlights the company's commitment to technological innovation and efficiency in shipbuilding.
On the 24th, STX Shipbuilding received an order from Aktif Shipping Company for an 115,000 DWT Afra-class tanker. The vessel is currently under construction using this new method, which is expected to allow the company to deliver the ship approximately three months ahead of the original schedule. This advancement not only improves project timelines but also enhances customer satisfaction and market competitiveness.
The tanker measures 250 meters in length, 44 meters in width, and 21 meters in height. It can operate at a speed of 15 knots, making it highly efficient for long-haul cargo transport. The new floating dock construction method developed by STX addresses key limitations of traditional methods, such as prolonged floating times and restricted operational flexibility. This innovation enables more efficient mass production of marine equipment and significantly reduces shipbuilding timelines.
Thanks to this cutting-edge approach, STX Shipbuilding can now construct large oil tankers using just six sets of equipment, cutting down the construction time dramatically compared to conventional floating dock methods. This not only boosts productivity but also lowers overall costs.
According to a company representative, "By adopting this new method, we have eliminated the need for offshore crane rentals, saving approximately 8 billion won annually. Additionally, the shortened construction period has improved our operational efficiency. Looking ahead, we plan to build 6 to 8 high-value ships each year in the floating dock, aiming to position our brand as a leader in the production of large, high-tech vessels."
