STX Shipbuilding Reduces Construction Duration with Floating Dock
STX Shipbuilding recently made a significant breakthrough by successfully launching a large oil tanker using an innovative floating dock construction method, showcasing its advanced engineering capabilities on the global stage. This achievement marks a major milestone in the shipbuilding industry and highlights the company's commitment to technological innovation.
On the 24th, STX Shipbuilding received an order from Aktif Shipping Company for an 115,000 DWT Afra-class tanker. The vessel is being constructed using this new method, which is expected to reduce the construction timeline by approximately three months compared to the original delivery schedule. This efficiency gain is a key advantage that positions STX as a leader in modern shipbuilding practices.
The tanker measures 250 meters in length, 44 meters in width, and 21 meters in height. It is designed to operate at a speed of 15 knots, making it highly efficient for long-haul cargo transport. The newly developed floating dock construction method not only addresses the limitations of traditional methods—such as prolonged floating times and restricted operational flexibility—but also enhances the scalability of marine equipment production. As a result, the overall shipbuilding process becomes faster and more cost-effective.
With this revolutionary approach, STX Shipbuilding can now construct large oil tankers using just six sets of equipment, significantly cutting down the time required for ship assembly. Compared to conventional floating dock methods, the new technique reduces construction time by up to two days and three months, depending on the project scale.
According to a representative from STX Shipbuilding, the new method brings substantial benefits, including reduced costs associated with offshore crane rentals. The company estimates annual savings of around 8 billion won, along with improved project timelines. Looking ahead, STX plans to build 6 to 8 high-value ships annually in the floating dock, aiming to strengthen its brand presence in the market for large, technologically advanced vessels.
This innovation not only boosts STX’s competitive edge but also reinforces its vision of leading the future of shipbuilding through sustainable and efficient technologies.
