Barrington-Countryside Fire Protection District update

Excerpts from TheChicagoTribune.com:

On May 15, the new emergency rapid response vehicle made its debut and reached Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington within just 90 seconds to assist a patient. This is a major improvement over previous response times, which used to take around five minutes. Fire Battalion Chief Scott Motisi of the Barrington-Countryside Fire Protection District explained that without this specialized unit, a fire engine would have had to come from the Barrington Hills station, which is farther away.

The re-equipped 2004 Ford Excursion now carries advanced medical equipment typically found on an ambulance, along with hydraulic tools and a four-gas monitor. According to Motisi, the vehicle is fully equipped to handle most emergencies during the critical first five minutes.

The district serves approximately 20,000 residents across parts of Barrington Hills, South Barrington, Lake Barrington, Inverness, Fox River Grove, and unincorporated areas of Cook, Lake, and McHenry counties—covering a total of 46 square miles. Interestingly, 80% of the area doesn’t have fire hydrants.

Instead, firefighters rely on nearby retention ponds and water tenders to fight fires. “The communities chose not to have hydrants because they prefer a more rural setting with larger lots,” said Roman, a district official.

Tom Long, board president of the fire district, emphasized the importance of quick response times. “We’re always looking for cost-effective ways to improve our service,” he said. The new vehicle operates from the South Barrington Police Department, between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., Monday through Friday—when most calls are received. “This is data-driven,” Long added. The vehicle handles eight to 10 calls per week and helps the district meet the American Heart Association’s six-minute response time for cardiac emergencies.

Fire Chief Jeffrey Swanson mentioned that the district is planning to open a third fire station. “This vehicle is helping us prepare for that expansion, though we haven’t selected a site yet,” he said. The current Ford Excursion, valued at $47,500, was upgraded with medical and emergency equipment. A new, fully equipped model would cost $113,000, according to Swanson.
