The Daily Herald recently published a heartwarming story about the Prospect Heights Fire District spreading holiday cheer to low-income families in their community: On Monday, Santa Claus took a short break from his busy North Pole preparations to deliver toys and clothing to children in Prospect Heights. The visit was part of an annual event organized by local firefighters and police officers, who made the deliveries aboard an ambulance. This year, firefighters and police officers worked together to provide gifts and clothes for 23 children from seven different families. The children were all referred by social workers in the area, including those from Elementary School District 23 and Wheeling School District 21. In addition to the toys, the team also arranged for financial support for an elderly resident to help with holiday meals. The initiative was made possible through the collaboration of several local organizations, such as the fire department, police department, city staff, the mayor’s office, the park district, the Prospect Heights Lions Club, and the Garden Club. Many local businesses also contributed, including Lakeridge Builders, Heights Body and Motor Works, Fries Automotive, Player’s Pub & Grill, Union Ale House, Rocky Vanders, and Wheel-Inn Body and Motor Works in Wheeling. "By working together, we were able to raise more money and involve more people," said Deputy Fire Chief Timothy Jones. "This year, we raised $7,500, which allowed us to make a real difference for these families." Kathy Nowicki, executive director of the Prospect Heights Park District, added, "The Secret Santa Committee saw this as a chance to help families with basic needs. It's not just about the gifts—it's about bringing joy and smiles to the kids on Christmas morning." While the gifts weren't extravagant, they were exactly what the children needed. Most of them received clothing, shoes, boots, and winter coats, along with one toy each. This approach ensured that the children were both warm and happy during the holidays. "We're here to help people," Jones said. "This is just another way we can give back. It feels good to be able to brighten someone's day, especially during the holidays."
