Elgin starts Explorer program

The Daily Herald recently featured an article about a brand-new Fire Explorer program launched by the Elgin Fire Department. According to the piece, this initiative aims to inspire young people to consider careers in firefighting while simultaneously boosting diversity within the department. George Steiner, an Elgin firefighter who initiated the project, explained that the program, which is open to youths aged 14 to 20, is anticipated to commence in early fall. The curriculum will closely resemble the training provided in fire academies for entry-level firefighters but will move at a more relaxed pace. Participants can expect to meet twice monthly. From the very beginning, Explorers will learn essential skills such as CPR and First Aid. Other subjects will cover fire behavior, extrication techniques, ladder handling, fire hose operations, water dynamics, forcible entry, ventilation strategies, and rescue methods. Steiner noted that the annual cost of the program is roughly $15,000, covering materials, helmets, and uniforms. Financially, it will be partially supported by the department’s public education budget, with additional funding potentially coming from city funds allocated for diversity programs. Elgin Fire Chief John Fahy expressed that the program had been overdue for some time. Previously, if students in Elgin wished to explore the fire service, they would have to join the South Elgin Fire Explorer program. The new initiative will utilize both on-duty and off-duty personnel, minimizing overtime costs. Fahy emphasized that combining these resources could prove highly beneficial. Mike Przybylski, another Elgin firefighter, highlighted the importance of education within the program. He mentioned that participants must maintain a minimum C average in their studies. This emphasis aligns with Elgin’s well-established Police Explorer program and the Aurora Fire Explorer program, which was established back in 2002. Carl DeCarlo, a firefighter and the fire science instructional coordinator at Elgin Community College, played a key role in developing this new program. In the future, Explorers may even earn an EMT-Basic certification through ECC upon completing the course. The inaugural class will accommodate up to 20 Explorers. Prospective members will need to pass a basic physical exam and participate in an interview process. To learn more, there will be a Fire Explorer open house and orientation event from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 12, at Fire Station No. 2, located at 650 Big Timber Drive in Elgin.
