Pa Lung 507 leads the heavy bar new benchmark: quality safety and environmental protection (Figure)
China's truck industry has long been described as "lacking weight and being light," a phrase that captures the historical challenge of developing heavy-duty trucks. Despite decades of progress, China's auto industry struggled to produce truly robust, high-capacity trucks. However, by 2005, with the expansion of China’s expressway network and increasing pressure on logistics companies to reduce costs, the market began to see the emergence of high-performance, environmentally friendly, and efficient heavy trucks.
At the 10th Beijing International Automobile Exhibition, several high-end heavy trucks made their debut, including Liuzhou Automobile’s Balong 507 (representing European technology), Dongfeng Tianlong (representing Japanese technology), and FAW Jiefang J6 (showcasing fully independent R&D). These models not only reshaped the existing product structure in China’s truck industry but also revitalized the long-stagnant heavy truck market.
Traditionally, the Chinese heavy truck market was dominated by 7-liter engines based on Steyr platform technology, mainly used in light and medium trucks. As market demands evolved, larger horsepower engines became more popular, and trucks over 15 tons started gaining traction. Consumers now expected more from their trucks—not just reliable money-making machines, but safer, greener, and more comfortable vehicles.
In response, commercial vehicle manufacturers invested heavily in the development of high-end heavy trucks, pushing the industry toward a “high-end comfort†era. Heavy trucks began incorporating advanced technologies, improved design, and greater driver-centric features. At the Beijing Auto Show, Liuzhou Automobile’s Balong 507 stood out for its safety, efficiency, and comfort, aligning perfectly with the exhibition’s theme of “Dream, Harmony, and a New Realm.â€
The Balong 507 is a four-year project developed by Liuzhou, integrating advanced European truck technologies and inheriting the safety and humanistic concepts of European heavy trucks. It also borrowed from Zhongtong’s “Dragon†brand and the practical experience of the “Longka†brand. The result is a high-end truck that matches global standards, combining European technology with Chinese culture.
Key features include a unique keel frame structure, all-steel bumper, reinforced door beams, and a four-point floating cab. The front suspension uses polyurethane springs, while the rear suspension employs airbags—both significantly reducing vibrations and enhancing ride comfort. The cab is also wider than other models, offering drivers a more spacious and hotel-like resting environment. With a streamlined body and a 24-valve engine, the Balong 507 achieves better fuel efficiency, saving about 5 liters per 100 km compared to similar models. It can also be equipped with high-powered engines and top-tier configurations like the 462 bridge, which are typically found only in imported European and American trucks.
A veteran driver who tested the Balong 507 said, “It has strong power, starts smoothly even from the fourth gear, and shifts like a car. The dashboard isn’t too high, giving me a wider view. I heard it can come with airbags, and I think it’s just as safe and comfortable as some domestic luxury cars.†Many test drivers at the event felt the same, calling the Balong 507 a new upgrade of a “European-style†truck.
With the influence of the Balong 507 and other high-end models, the Chinese heavy truck market is set for a new transformation. Liuzhou, with its strong technical capabilities and human-centered approach, is well-positioned to become one of the leading players in the high-end heavy truck segment.
