Pa Lung 507 leads the heavy bar new benchmark: quality safety and environmental protection (Figure)
China's truck industry has long been described as "lacking weight and being light in weight," a phrase that vividly captures the historical challenge of the sector. Despite decades of development, China's auto industry struggled to produce true heavy-duty trucks, with large-tonnage vehicles remaining scarce. However, things began to change in 2005. With the expansion of China’s expressway network and growing pressure on logistics companies to reduce costs, high-performance, eco-friendly, and efficient heavy trucks started emerging in the market.
At the 10th Beijing International Automobile Exhibition, several high-end heavy trucks made their debut. European technology was represented by Liuzhou Automobile’s Balong 507, Japanese technology by Dongfeng Tianlong, and fully independent R&D efforts by FAW Jiefang J6. These models not only transformed the existing product structure of China’s truck industry but also revitalized the long-standing heavy truck market.
In the past, the Chinese heavy truck market was dominated by 7-liter engines based on Steyr platform technology, primarily used in light and medium trucks. As market demands evolved, larger horsepower engines became more popular, with trucks over 15 tons gradually becoming the trend. Consumers now expect heavy trucks to be more than just “money-making machines.†They want safer, more environmentally friendly, and more comfortable options.
Recognizing this shift, commercial vehicle manufacturers have invested heavily in developing high-end heavy trucks. This has led the Chinese market into a new phase—moving from “common practicality†to “high-end comfort.†Heavy trucks now incorporate advanced technologies, improved performance, and human-centric design features. At the Beijing Auto Show, Liuzhou Automobile’s Balong 507 stood out for its safety, economy, and comfort, aligning perfectly with the theme of “Dream, Harmony, and a New Realm.â€
The Balong 507 is a four-year project developed by Liuzhou, incorporating advanced European truck technologies. It inherits the safety and human-centered design of European heavy trucks while drawing on Zhongtong’s “Dragon†brand and the “Longka†brand experience. The result is a high-end heavy truck that matches global standards, blending European technology with Chinese culture.
According to the brand representatives, the Balong 507 features a unique keel frame structure, all-steel bumper, and reinforced door beams, offering superior safety compared to plastic or steel-synthetic bumpers. Its cab includes a full four-point suspension system, with polyurethane springs in the front and airbag shock absorbers in the rear, significantly reducing vibrations for a smoother ride. The cabin is also wider by over 10 cm, making it as comfortable as resting in a hotel bed. Additionally, its streamlined body and 24-valve engine improve fuel efficiency, saving about 5 liters per 100 km compared to similar models. It can be equipped with high-powered engines and 462 bridges, which are among the best domestic configurations—previously only found in imported European and American vehicles.
A veteran driver who tested the Balong 507 said, “It has great power and can start directly from the 4th gear. The gears are smooth and easy to shift, like a car. The dashboard isn’t too high, giving me a better view. I heard it can even be equipped with airbags, and I think it’s no less safe or comfortable than some domestic cars.â€
Many consumers at the event were impressed by the Balong 507, calling it a new upgrade of a “European-style truck.†With the influence of models like the Balong 507, the Chinese heavy truck market is expected to undergo significant changes. Liuzhou, with its strong technical foundation and human-centered approach, is well-positioned to become one of the leading players in the high-end heavy truck segment.
