On December 23rd, China's first industrial project for producing 20,000 tons per year of styrene-butadiene transparent impact resin with independent intellectual property rights successfully passed a technical review organized by the Science and Technology Department of Guangdong Province in Guangzhou. This milestone marks a significant breakthrough in China's polymer industry, demonstrating the country's growing capability in advanced materials development. The technology was jointly developed by Guangdong Zhonghe Plastics Co., Ltd. and Jiangsu Shengjie Co., Ltd., using butyl lithium as an initiator to synthesize styrene and butadiene into a transparent impact resin. The project, which involved a total investment of 247 million yuan, officially started production in October 2004 at Guangdong Zhonghe’s facility. Over the past three years, it has produced nearly 50,000 tons of resin, proving the stability and scalability of the process. An expert appraisal committee, including renowned scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences such as Wang Fosong, praised the project for its innovative two-tank serial batch polymerization technology and high-efficiency reactor integration. This is the first time such a system has been developed independently in China, securing key intellectual property rights. The technology features adjustable molecular structures, high monomer conversion (over 99%), excellent solvent recovery (99.8%), low solvent consumption (5–10 kg/ton), and minimal initiator usage (1–1.1 kg/ton). Energy consumption is also low, at just 250 kg of standard oil per ton. The process is stable, environmentally friendly, and meets strict industrial standards. Testing by the National Petrochemical Organic Resin Synthetic Resin Quality Supervision and Inspection Center confirmed that the product performance matches or exceeds that of similar foreign products. Experts recommend further R&D efforts, keeping a close eye on international advancements, and expanding the application fields of the resin to enhance market competitiveness. This achievement not only highlights China's progress in polymer science but also sets a new benchmark for domestic industrial technology, paving the way for future innovation and global expansion.
