TP-Link 8-Port 10G Desktop/Rackmount Switch (TL-SX1008)

I recently purchased the TP-Link TL-SX1008 8-Port 10Gbps Desktop/Rackmount Switch after doing some research on its features and price. TP-Link offers another model, the DS1008X Omada, which is marketed more towards business use and comes with a longer 5-year warranty compared to the consumer-focused TL-SX1008's 3-year warranty. Prices between these two models typically differ by around SGD $100 to SGD $200 depending on where you buy them. For my needs, I just wanted a simple, affordable 10Gbps unmanaged switch to upgrade my home network. The TL-SX1008 fit the bill perfectly. I got it for SGD $400 on Amazon.sg, but with a Prime Day promotion, I managed to knock off SGD $20 through a credit card discount. Including shipping costs, which were SGD $2 since it was fulfilled by BizgramAsia, my total came out to SGD $382. Opening the box, everything seemed well-packaged. The front of the switch had the typical TP-Link branding, while the back revealed the eight Ethernet ports along with a power input port. There’s also a small fan built into the device to help keep it cool, which does produce a faint humming noise—noticeable in quiet environments but not so much when the switch is placed inside a closed rack or cabinet. The build quality feels solid enough for a consumer-grade product. Ventilation grates line the sides, allowing airflow to prevent overheating. One downside is that the heat generated by the switch did raise the temperature inside my cabinet slightly, going from 34°C to 36°C even though I already have two Noctua NF-A20 fans providing additional cooling. Since this is an unmanaged switch, it lacks advanced features like VLANs or QoS settings. That said, it works exactly as expected for basic connectivity purposes. For the price, it’s hard to complain. While I can’t fully test its performance at 10Gbps speeds due to my current hardware limitations, it’s still a good investment for future-proofing my home network. Overall, I’m satisfied with the TL-SX1008. At SGD $380, it offers excellent value for anyone looking to add 10Gbps capability to their home setup without breaking the bank. If you’re planning to place it in an open area where the fan noise might be bothersome, consider placing it elsewhere like a closet or rack. Despite the minor drawbacks, this switch is definitely worth considering if you're aiming for a budget-friendly solution.
