Baosteel Co., Ltd. independently developed electromagnetic induction special thick plate
The first batch of 350 tons of independently developed electromagnetic induction thick plates by Baosteel Co., Ltd. has been successfully delivered to customers and will be used in the world's largest single-capacity tidal power generation system—the Xiqiao Chaoshan Power Station in South Korea. This achievement marks Baosteel as one of the few global manufacturers capable of producing such high-performance steel plates, a critical component for advanced motor technology.
Electromagnetic induction thick plates are a specialized type of steel designed to meet the evolving needs of the power industry. They offer excellent magnetic permeability, significantly enhancing the efficiency of power generation in motors. With their energy-saving and eco-friendly properties, these plates align with the future direction of modern motor manufacturing and have gained widespread international acceptance. However, due to their high technical complexity and challenging production process, only a handful of steel companies worldwide are able to produce them.
This project was part of a major motor equipment bidding process, where Zhejiang Fuchunjiang Company from China won the contract for 10 units. The key components of the motors, including the rotor end plates, required the use of electromagnetic induction thick plates, totaling approximately 350 tons. Importing such materials would not only be costly but also lead to long delivery times, which could delay the entire manufacturing schedule.
To address this challenge, Baosteel Co., Ltd. formed a dedicated team comprising its manufacturing department, heavy plate factory, sales center, and research institute. By leveraging internal expertise and working collaboratively, the team aimed to enhance the development and production capabilities of the new thick plate product.
The foreign client had specific requirements for the electromagnetic induction thick plates, demanding high magnetic permeability. Initially, using an existing steel grade at Baosteel did not meet both the magnetic and mechanical performance standards. To overcome this, the research team worked through numerous challenges, drawing on their extensive experience in thick plate manufacturing. They re-evaluated the process parameters and successfully completed trial production within a short timeframe.
A special performance test conducted by the foreign client confirmed that all the technical indicators of Baosteel’s electromagnetic induction thick plates exceeded the set standards. In fact, the quality and performance of the product were even superior to those of similar foreign products, marking a significant milestone for Baosteel in the global market.
