China's scientific fertilization coverage has reached 30%

By the end of 2007, scientific fertilization had been applied to 30% of China's arable land, according to Gao Xiangzhao, head of the Fertilization Division at the Agricultural Technology Extension Center under the Ministry of Agriculture. He made this disclosure during the International Seminar on Research and Development of High-yield and High-efficiency Industries for Hybrid Rice. Gao highlighted that although China’s arable land constitutes just 9% of the global total, it produces 25% of the world’s agricultural output and feeds 22% of the global population—achieving a significant milestone. However, the country also consumes 35% of the world’s chemical fertilizers, facing long-standing issues such as low fertilizer efficiency and imbalanced application practices. Since 2005, the government has invested steadily in soil testing and fertilization projects, with funding reaching 200 million yuan in the first year, 500 million in the second, and 900 million in the third. These efforts led to the establishment of 1,200 pilot counties across the country. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, scientific fertilization has delivered measurable benefits. In the pilot areas, grain output increased by 5% per mu, fertilizer use efficiency improved by 3%, and farmers saw an average income boost of over 25 yuan per mu. Notably, in regions like Hubei, Jiangsu, and Shandong—where excessive fertilizer use was once common—there has been a gradual reduction in nitrogen fertilizer application. In 2008, the Ministry of Agriculture planned to expand the promotion of soil testing and formula fertilization. The initiative would not only cover more areas but also extend its focus from food crops to cash crops. Training programs will target large-scale farmers, technology demonstration households, and key farming families, aiming to bring more farmers into the fold of scientific fertilization techniques. This move is expected to further enhance productivity while promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
