Box Alarm fire in Winnetka, 2-26-14
Larry Shapiro here:
The Winnetka Fire Department received a call about smoke billowing from the attic of a house on 924 Pine Tree Lane shortly after 9 PM on Wednesday night. However, before the firefighters arrived, police units verified the smoke was coming from a house located at the corrected address of 910 Pine Tree Lane.
When the first engine turned onto the street, it was immediately enveloped in thick smoke, reducing visibility to almost zero. The crew managed to navigate past the house and positioned the truck in the driveway. The scene was chaotic, with heavy smoke indicating a severe situation at this split-level home undergoing renovations. Firefighters attempted an interior attack as flames began consuming the roof at the rear of the house. Northfield's Truck 29 reported seeing intense fire as they approached the area two blocks away.
The interior attack was quickly abandoned when the fire rapidly spread throughout the attic. Fortunately, the team inside noticed a dangerous hole in the first floor before it could pose a threat to any firefighters.
An elevated master stream was deployed from Winnetka's Truck 28, prompting the alarm to be upgraded to a Box Alarm. Northfield’s Truck 29 also brought its own elevated master stream into action. Since the house backed up to Tower Road, trucks from Glenview and Skokie set up there but didn’t use their master streams. Instead, both aerial ladders were used to provide much-needed illumination for the firefighters on the ground.
Engines from Winnetka, Glencoe, Highland Park, Northbrook, Highwood, and Evanston were present, along with trucks from Winnetka, Northfield, Glenview, and Skokie. Additional support came from a squad unit from Morton Grove, an ambulance from Wilmette, the MESS Canteen, and several chief officers.
One particularly striking image shows a firefighter standing amidst the chaos, covered in a light layer of ice, capturing the harsh conditions they faced in Sector A. Another photo highlights Glenview's Truck 14 with two lines running from Tower Road to the rear of the house. Meanwhile, three lines were seen running off Winnetka Engine 28 directly in front of the burning structure.
The firefighters worked tirelessly under difficult circumstances, dealing with freezing temperatures that coated equipment and personnel alike in ice. Despite the challenges, they managed to coordinate efforts effectively, with multiple companies and units contributing to the operation. A video from the scene is currently being edited and will be shared soon.
It’s moments like these that highlight the dedication and teamwork of our local fire departments, who risk everything to protect lives and property in our community.
