Geely holds Yuchai diesel engine for export
In 2009, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., Ltd. partnered with China Yuchai International Co., Ltd. to develop a 2.0L passenger car diesel engine intended for use in Geely's export models. Although the specific model name has not been officially disclosed, it is widely speculated that this engine could be part of Geely's future "Vision" series, aiming to enhance its global presence.
Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Yuchai, has established two joint ventures with Geely Group in Tiantai, Zhejiang, and Jining, Shandong. In these partnerships, Guangxi Yuchai holds a 52% stake, while Geely owns 30%, and the remaining 18% is held by Zhejiang Yinlun Machinery Co., Ltd. These joint ventures are focused on producing a range of diesel engines, including the 2.0L unit, which is expected to meet Euro 5 emission standards. Additionally, plans are in place to also manufacture 1.8L and 1.6L diesel engines, expanding Geely’s capabilities in the diesel engine market.
Initially, the two joint ventures had an annual production capacity of 50,000 units, totaling 100,000 units combined. However, with increasing demand, the production capacity is set to rise significantly, reaching up to 300,000 units per year in the near future.
This collaboration aligns with recent policy changes, as outlined in the "Guidance Catalogue for Industrial Structure Adjustment" released by the National Development and Reform Commission in December of the previous year. The document encouraged the advanced development and manufacturing of automotive diesel engines, signaling a positive outlook for such technologies. As a result, Geely's diesel vehicles are primarily targeted for export markets, helping the company expand its international footprint.
It's worth noting that China Yuchai has a strong track record in the industry, having won the "China Brand Annual Award NO.1" in the internal combustion engine category in 2007, further solidifying its reputation as a leading manufacturer in the sector.
