The country is strong and strong, can not do without a strong chemical industry

**Interview with NPC Deputy and Chairman of Hangzhou Institute of Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. – Yao Xianping** Yao Xianping is a new face in the National People’s Congress, and one of the few representatives from Zhejiang’s chemical industry in the 11th session. As the chairman of Hangzhou Institute of Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., he has been actively involved in policy discussions related to the development of the oil and chemical sector. According to Yao, China's oil and chemical industry is currently at a crucial stage of transformation and upgrading. However, there is a growing misconception in society that petrochemical companies are inherently high-risk, high-pollution, and high-emission industries. This perception has led to widespread rejection and suppression of such enterprises, creating immense pressure for their sustainable development. This negative attitude not only hinders the training of chemical professionals and the growth of the industry but also poses potential risks to local and national economic development. The oil and chemical sectors involve complex chemical reactions and materials that require strict safety and environmental controls. In the early stages of development, China did face some challenges and shortcomings. However, these should not overshadow the industry’s vital role in the national economy or the technological advancements it has driven over the years. Yao emphasized that no country can thrive without a strong oil and chemical industry. He cited Deng Xiaoping’s famous saying: “Problems in development must be solved through development.” Simply rejecting or abandoning the industry is neither wise nor acceptable. To change public perception, Yao believes that the industry needs to improve its self-discipline and transparency. Companies must invest more in safety, environmental protection, and technological innovation. They should also focus on employee training and quality improvement, as many private chemical companies suffer from low-quality workforce issues, leading to management failures and environmental violations. In addition, government officials and the public need better understanding of the industry. Yao suggests that industry associations, experts, and other social forces should be involved in shaping policies and planning the overall layout of the sector. For eco-friendly products and industries with promising market potential, preferential policies on land, capital, and taxation should be introduced to guide the industry toward sustainable and rapid development. Ultimately, Yao sees the future of the oil and chemical industry as one of transformation and responsibility. With proper guidance, innovation, and public support, the sector can continue to contribute significantly to China’s economic and technological progress.
