The appearance of J6 Fang Xian FAW independent innovation force
On December 25, 2006, during the 2007 Business Conference of FAW Liberation, senior executives from FAW Group, FAW Liberation, and FAW Liberation Trading Company gathered to announce the official launch of the Liberation J6 platform in 2007. This heavy truck platform, developed over six years with an investment of nearly RMB 10 billion, marked a significant milestone in FAW’s independent research and development journey.
The J6 platform represents a major leap forward for FAW Liberation, showcasing its capability to compete on a global scale. As a leading brand in China's automotive industry, FAW Liberation has long been committed to self-reliant innovation. Its achievements not only highlight its determination but also inspire confidence among other commercial vehicle manufacturers to build their own brands.
The R&D investment in the J6 platform was massive, with over RMB 5.1 to 5.2 billion spent on base construction, including full vehicle production, engine development, and assembly processes. In addition, FAW Liberation invested a total of RMB 10 billion in hardware and software for the J6 platform, including prototype testing and trials, which cost around RMB 500 million.
FAW Group started the J6 platform project in 2000, investing between RMB 400 to 500 million annually in certification and development. FAW Liberation Company contributed between RMB 300 to 350 million each year. Over time, these investments accumulated to nearly RMB 10 billion, reflecting the company’s long-term vision and commitment.
According to Xu Xianping, General Manager of FAW Liberation, the J6 platform is the highest-level truck platform in China, surpassing many domestic competitors. It eliminates common shortcomings of self-owned brands and sets a new benchmark for quality and technology.
The J6 project began in 2001 under the leadership of Yan Yanfeng, who emphasized the importance of independent development. The platform was developed over six years, involving extensive collaboration with international partners, particularly an Italian firm, while maintaining a central role in the design and engineering process.
Dong Chunbo, Deputy General Manager of FAW Group, highlighted that the J6 platform was a bold move, driven by the need to establish a strong national brand. Despite initial challenges, FAW successfully completed the development of key components such as the Euro III engine, chassis, and bridge.
Cai Zhenfa, General Manager of FAW Liberation Trading Corporation, emphasized that the J6 platform not only offers a strong visual impact but also meets international quality standards. He stressed that the brand must remain at the top of the domestic market and continuously innovate.
With the launch of the J6 in 2007, FAW Liberation aimed to enhance its product structure and strengthen its market position. The company expected sales to grow from 3,000 units in 2007 to 30,000 by 2009, supported by improved product lines and a robust marketing and service network.
In 2006, FAW Liberation implemented the “521†product strategy, successfully launching the J5 platform and regaining market share. By the end of 2006, the company had sold over 120,000 units, aiming for 130,000 for the year. This marked a return to the top of the industry.
With the J6 platform set to enter the high-end market in 2007, FAW Liberation is well-positioned to lead the next phase of growth, supported by strong R&D, marketing, and service capabilities. The J6 is not just a product—it’s a symbol of FAW’s ambition to become a global leader in commercial vehicles.
