Most People Think Solar Panels are the Future of Home Improvement

Recently, we carried out a survey among UK homeowners to understand their views on home energy improvements. The results showed that a majority of respondents (63%) would opt for solar panels over other renewable energy solutions if they were to install eco-friendly technology at home. Ground-source heat pumps came in second place, chosen by 25% of participants.

Hydro/biomass systems and domestic wind turbines were the least favored options, selected by only 6.1% and 5.2%, respectively.

Changing Perspectives Due to Lockdowns

The nationwide lockdowns imposed in the UK due to the COVID-19 pandemic have also influenced people's willingness to make changes to their homes. Almost 40% of those surveyed stated that lockdowns have altered their perception of their living spaces, prompting them to consider making improvements.

This shift in mindset was more pronounced than seasonal changes, with only 29% mentioning that colder weather motivated them to enhance their homes' energy efficiency.

The UK has experienced three national lockdowns so far—the first on March 23, 2020, followed by additional ones in November 2020 and January 2021. Spending more time at home during the day likely contributed to increased energy consumption and costs, driving people to seek out more cost-effective energy alternatives. As renewable technology continues to advance and become more affordable, homeowners are looking forward to a greener future.

Shifting Habits Amidst the Pandemic

With many of us working remotely, there's naturally a heightened focus on energy usage and expenses—especially given the widespread financial impacts. Research indicates that during these unprecedented times, we're sleeping longer, leading to later morning routines like using the kettle or toaster.

Data collected from tens of thousands of smart meters and reported by Sky News revealed that we're now consuming more energy in the afternoon than in the mornings—a period when most of us would typically be at work. Notably, electricity usage surged significantly in London, possibly due to more residents performing their jobs from home. However, during enforced lockdown periods, energy consumption dropped as people ventured out before returning to confinement measures.

It remains unclear whether these habits will revert once the pandemic ends and how quickly—if ever—we'll return to 'normal.' For now, there's an intensified interest in energy efficiency as we explore viable alternatives.

Solar Panels Boost Property Prices by £32,459

According to research by Effectivehome.co.uk, installing solar panels in a residential property has boosted UK property values by an average of £32,459. Released in August 2020, this study strengthens the case for homeowners to adopt solar technology like solar panels and batteries at their properties.

This substantial increase in value stems directly from the long-term savings homeowners enjoy post-installation—up to £27,500 on electricity bills over a 30-year span!

Benefits of Solar Panels

There are numerous reasons to install solar panels at your home. These include:

  • Enhancing your home’s energy performance certificate (EPC).
  • Minimizing your carbon footprint.
  • Combatting global warming.
  • Ensuring energy security for your family.
  • Becoming your own sustainable power provider.

Invented in the mid-1950s and first used domestically in the mid-1970s, solar panel technology in 2021 offers a reliable and financially sound method to boost energy efficiency and save money over the long term.

Moreover, with over 73,000 terawatts of solar energy hitting Earth every day from the sun—more than 10,000 times the world’s total energy consumption—it’s clear why transitioning away from fossil fuels must happen sooner rather than later.
