Recently, we carried out a survey among UK homeowners to explore their perspectives on enhancing home energy efficiency. Our findings indicate that the majority of respondents (63%) would opt for solar panels if they were to invest in renewable energy solutions for their homes. Coming in second place, ground source heat pumps garnered support from 25% of participants. Hydro/biomass systems and domestic wind turbines ranked as the least favored options, selected by only 6.1% and 5.2% of respondents respectively.  The nationwide lockdowns imposed in the UK due to the Covid-19 pandemic have significantly influenced homeowners' attitudes toward making changes to their living spaces. Approximately 40% of those surveyed reported that the lockdowns had altered their perceptions about their homes, prompting them to consider improvements. Interestingly, this shift was more pronounced than seasonal changes; only 29% mentioned that the colder weather motivated them to enhance their home's energy efficiency. The UK has experienced three national lockdowns so far—initially on March 23, 2020, followed by another in November 2020 and January 2021. With people spending more time at home during the day, there has been a noticeable rise in daily energy consumption and costs. This has driven many to seek out cost-effective alternatives for home energy. Advances in renewable technology combined with decreasing costs make this a promising time for homeowners to embrace sustainable energy solutions.  As more people work remotely, there’s a growing emphasis on monitoring energy usage and expenses—especially during a period when incomes have been affected. Studies show that our sleep patterns have shifted, leading to later morning routines involving appliances like kettles and toasters. Data from tens of thousands of smart meters, reported by Sky News, reveals increased energy consumption in the afternoon, a time when most of us would typically be at work. Notably, London saw a substantial uptick in electricity usage, likely due to more residents working from home. However, during enforced lockdown periods, energy consumption dipped as people ventured out before returning to restrictions. It remains uncertain whether these habits will revert once the pandemic ends or how swiftly—if ever—we’ll return to pre-pandemic norms. For now, there will continue to be a strong focus on energy efficiency as we explore practical alternatives.  According to research by Effectivehome.co.uk, installing solar panels in a residential property has boosted UK property values by an average of £32,459. Released in August 2020, this study further supports the case for homeowners to adopt solar technology, including solar panels and batteries, at their properties. This significant increase in value stems directly from the long-term savings homeowners enjoy post-installation—up to £27,500 on electricity bills over 30 years!  There are numerous reasons to install solar panels at your home. These include: First invented in the mid-1950s and introduced into domestic settings in the mid-1970s, solar panel technology in 2021 provides a reliable and financially sound method to boost energy efficiency while saving money over the long term. Moreover, with over 73,000 terawatts of solar energy striking Earth every day from the sun—more than 10,000 times the world’s total energy usage—the argument for transitioning rapidly away from fossil fuels becomes increasingly compelling.  Fun Facts About Solar Panels  Are you considering improving your home’s energy efficiency with solar panels?
