Box Alarm fire in Winnetka, 2-26-14
Larry Shapiro here:
The call came in around 9 PM on Wednesday evening when the Winnetka Fire Department responded to reports of smoke billowing out of the attic at 924 Pine Tree Lane. However, prior to their arrival, responding police units had already confirmed smoke coming from a different address—910 Pine Tree Lane.
As the first engine arrived, it quickly became clear how severe the situation was. The vehicle drove past the house, navigating through thick smoke that made visibility nearly impossible. They managed to pull up to the driveway, where companies began assessing the situation. It was a split-level house undergoing renovations, and heavy smoke was already engulfing the area. Firefighters initially attempted an interior attack, but the blaze had already spread rapidly, consuming the roof at the rear of the house. From two blocks away, Northfield Truck 29 reported seeing significant flames.
Unfortunately, the interior attack was halted shortly after it began as the fire spread uncontrollably throughout the attic space. Thankfully, the crew noticed a dangerous hole in the first floor before it could lead to any injuries.
As the situation escalated, the alarm was upgraded to a Box Alarm. Winnetka Truck 28 deployed its elevated master stream while multiple hand lines were put into action. Northfield Truck 29 also brought its own elevated master stream into play. With the house backing onto Tower Road, support trucks from Glenview and Skokie set up there but didn’t deploy their master streams. Instead, both ladders provided crucial illumination for firefighters working the scene.
The firefighting effort involved engines from Winnetka, Glencoe, Highland Park, Northbrook, Highwood, and Evanston. Trucks were on-site from Winnetka, Northfield, Glenview, and Skokie. Additional units included a squad from Morton Grove, an ambulance from Wilmette, the MESS Canteen, and several chief officers.
Conditions were brutal as firefighters worked under extreme conditions. One image shows a firefighter covered with a thin layer of ice in Sector A, highlighting the challenges they faced. Another shot captures Glenview Truck 14 with two lines running off from Tower Road in the rear. In front of the house, three lines were active off Winnetka Engine 28.
Despite the intensity of the fire, the collaborative efforts of all departments prevented further damage or injury. A video from the scene will be posted soon.
This was clearly a challenging night for everyone involved, and I’m grateful for the dedication and bravery shown by all personnel who risked their lives to protect this home and neighborhood.
