Firefighters pay their respect to CFD FF Corey Ankum
As I sit here reflecting on the events of the day, I can't help but feel a deep sense of loss and respect for the brave men we've lost. Today marked a somber occasion as the wake and visitation for Chicago Firefighter Corey Ankum took place at the Apostolic Church of God, located at 6320 S. Dorchester Avenue. Corey was one of two firefighters from the Chicago Fire Department (CFD) who tragically lost their lives following the devastating building collapse on East 75th Street back in December 2010.
The church was filled with people paying their respects, including members of the Chicago Police Department, who showed their support by saluting as Corey's casket was carried inside. It was a poignant moment that brought tears to many eyes. As Tim Olk captured some incredible photos throughout the day, I want to share a few highlights. One image shows firefighters carefully carrying Corey's casket into the church, while another captures LT Thomas Ryan, president of the Chicago Fire Department Firefighters Union Local 2, addressing the media outside the venue.
The community came together in a powerful display of unity and grief. Firefighters from all over the city paid their respects, honoring Corey's memory and the sacrifices made by those who serve our communities. It’s moments like these that remind us of the bravery and dedication of our first responders.
For those who missed it, the Chicago Tribune has a short piece covering the event, and MyFoxChicago also shared an article alongside some touching video footage. Tim Olk’s documentation of the day will surely be cherished by Corey’s family and friends, as they continue to navigate their sorrow.
As the sun sets on this difficult day, my thoughts remain with Corey’s loved ones and colleagues. May his legacy live on through the countless lives he touched and the courage he exemplified as a firefighter. Rest in peace, Corey. You will never be forgotten.
