Fortron built the world's largest polyphenylene sulfide plant

Celanese Corporation, a leading global chemical company based in the United States, recently announced that Fortron Industrial Co., Ltd.—a joint venture between Ticona Engineering Plastics and Wuhan Chemical Industry Co., Ltd.—will be headquartered in Wilmington, North Carolina. The expansion of Fortron’s linear polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) production capacity has reached 15,000 tons per year, making it the largest PPS plant in the world. Fred Daniel, President of Fortron Industries, highlighted that the company celebrated its 20th anniversary by increasing production and launching several new PPS products. This expansion is designed to reinforce Fortron’s leadership in the industry and meet the rising global demand for PPS across sectors such as power, electronics, automotive, aerospace, textiles, and filtration. The newly expanded facility utilizes an advanced, environmentally friendly “integration” process developed by Wu Yu. This technology enhances efficiency while reducing environmental impact, aligning with growing sustainability goals in the industry. PPS, or polyphenylene sulfide, is a high-performance polymer known for its exceptional chemical resistance, heat stability, rigidity, and dimensional accuracy. It also exhibits low creep and minimal water absorption, making it an ideal replacement for metals and thermosetting plastics in demanding applications. Common uses include automotive components like pumps and valves, electrical connectors, circuit boards, aircraft parts, microwave components, conveyor belts, and power tools. Wu Yu Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., a major player in the chemical sector, operates facilities in Japan, China, the Netherlands, and the U.S., including its joint venture with Fortron. In 2006, the company reported sales of 146 billion yen. Ticona, a division of Celanese, specializes in engineering plastics and serves global markets. With $915 million in sales in 2006, Ticona maintains production, compounding, and research facilities in the U.S., Germany, and Brazil. Celanese Corporation, based in Dallas, Texas, reported total sales of $6.7 billion in 2006, with approximately 60% of revenue coming from North America and over 8,900 employees worldwide. This continued growth underscores the company’s strong presence and strategic investments in innovation and sustainability.
