Salt Chemical Drives Strategic Transformation of Xinjiang Salt Industry

In a recent report, it was revealed that Zhongyan Xinjiang Salt Industry Co., Ltd. has successfully launched two key salt distribution stations—Changji Changxing and Shihezi—with investments of 1.8 million and 2.6 million yuan respectively. These facilities are now fully operational, and the company is expected to invest approximately 13 million yuan in total for further development. Meanwhile, the salt distribution center in Urumqi is currently in the design phase, and efforts to modernize salt circulation across other regions are progressing rapidly. By 2010, Xinjiang Salt aims to establish 9 regional distribution centers and 85 county-level stations, alongside more than 20,000 retail outlets, significantly expanding its market reach. At the same time, the company's salt manufacturing units are actively upgrading their aging production equipment in a phased manner. For instance, Atushishi Salt Industry Co., Ltd. has started construction on a new 50,000-ton-per-year refined iodized salt project, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year. Similarly, the Hongda Salt Industry Co., Ltd. in Bukseer Mongolian Autonomous County is also building a similar 50,000-ton-per-year facility. Xinjiang, as one of China’s major lake salt production areas, holds vast salt reserves—over 50 billion tons, ranking second only to Qinghai. Compared to sea salt, Xinjiang’s lake salt is of higher quality and purity, making it ideal for deep processing and refining into high-value-added products such as sodium, bromine, and magnesium, or as top-tier raw materials for PVC production. As Xinjiang continues to develop its "black industry" like petrochemicals and coal chemical sectors, the "white industry"—focused on utilizing salt resources for salt chemical production—is gaining increasing attention from both domestic and international enterprises. Companies such as Henan Coal and China National Investment have already included salt chemical projects in their strategic plans and are taking active steps to implement them. The concept of establishing a salt chemical base in the Urumqi-Turpan-Hami and Buxaer regions is also becoming a reality. China National Salt Corporation has recently set up operations in Xinjiang, introducing a "two-step" development strategy aimed at strengthening the region's salt product and salt chemical industries. In line with the autonomous region’s new industrialization goals, Xinjiang's overall salt production capacity is projected to reach between 40 to 50 million tons by 2010. This will provide the country with the most abundant and reliable salt resources for the development of its largest salt chemical base.
