On July 1, 2005, Beijing is set to implement the Euro III emission standards, marking a significant step forward in environmental protection. Compared to the current high-quality gasoline and diesel standards in China, the new regulations impose stricter requirements on key environmental indicators such as sulfur, benzene, olefins, and aromatic hydrocarbons. The most notable changes between the old and new standards are the reductions in sulfur and olefin content.
Lower sulfur levels in fuel help reduce emissions of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC). Sulfur can accumulate on the surface of catalysts under oxygen-deprived conditions, leading to temporary poisoning and reduced efficiency of the catalytic converter. It can also negatively affect the oxygen sensor, further increasing pollutant emissions. Technicians emphasize that reducing sulfur content helps protect both the catalyst and the oxygen sensor, ensuring their long-term performance and effectiveness, while minimizing harmful emissions.
Olefin content has also been significantly reduced. Olefins, especially diolefins, are primarily formed during the catalytic cracking process in refineries. These compounds have poor thermal stability and oxidation resistance, making them prone to forming deposits at fuel injectors and intake valves. Over time, these deposits can harden into carbon buildup, which may interfere with engine performance.
According to the national standard GB17930 for unleaded gasoline, the olefin content must be below 35% (v/v). Even though Beijing's Euro II standard reduced this to 30%, it was still enough to cause some deposit formation. Under the Euro III standard, the limit is lowered to 18%. While this reduces deposit formation, it also makes the system more sensitive to any remaining impurities. Therefore, vehicles meeting Euro III standards require cleaner engines and higher-quality gasoline with better detergency.
