Salt Chemical Drives Strategic Transformation of Xinjiang Salt Industry

The reporter recently learned from Zhongyan Xinjiang Salt Industry Co., Ltd. that two key salt distribution stations—Changji Changxing and Shihezi—have been completed and are now in operation, with investments of 1.8 million and 2.6 million yuan respectively. The total projected investment for the entire project is estimated to reach 13 million yuan. Meanwhile, the salt distribution center in Urumqi is currently in the design phase, and modernization efforts across other regions are progressing steadily. By 2010, Xinjiang Salt plans to establish 9 regional distribution centers and 85 county-level distribution stations, along with more than 20,000 retail outlets, significantly expanding its nationwide coverage. In parallel, the company’s salt manufacturing facilities are undergoing planned technological upgrades. Atushishi Salt Industry Co., Ltd. has started construction on a new 50,000-ton-per-year refined iodized salt project, which is expected to be operational by the end of this year. Similarly, Hongda Salt Industry Co., Ltd. in Bukseer Mongolian Autonomous County is also building a 50,000-ton-per-year refined iodized salt facility. Xinjiang is one of China's most significant lake salt production areas, with proven salt reserves reaching 5 billion tons—second only to Qinghai. Compared to sea salt, Xinjiang’s lake salt is known for its high quality and purity, making it ideal for deep processing into value-added salt-based chemicals such as sodium, bromine, and magnesium, or as a top raw material for PVC production. As Xinjiang continues to develop its “black industry” in sectors like petrochemicals and coal chemistry, the “white industry” centered around salt resources is gaining increasing attention from both domestic and international enterprises. Companies such as Henan Coal and China National Investment have incorporated salt chemical development into their strategic plans and are already taking action. Additionally, the concept of establishing a salt chemical base in the Urumqi-Turpan-Hami and Buxaer regions is becoming more concrete. China National Salt Corporation has officially set up operations in Xinjiang and introduced a “two-step” development strategy, which is expected to lay a strong foundation for the future growth of the salt and salt chemical industries in the region. In line with the autonomous region’s industrialization goals, Xinjiang aims to increase its overall salt production capacity to between 40 and 50 million tons by 2010, ensuring the region remains a critical and reliable source of salt for the country’s largest salt chemical base.
